Finding people to foster children

Unaccompanied Asylum seekers

Fostering

What kind of people can be foster carers for unaccompanied asylum seekers?

You would usually have to:

speak another language

speak English to a certain level

have indefinite leave to remain in the United Kingdom

have been resident in the United Kingdom for more than five years

An asylum seeker is someone who comes to the UK, often fleeing persecution, torture or war, and applies for refugee status.

Until refugee status is granted, such a person remains an asylum seeker.

Asylum seekers often encounter homelessness and face difficulty in obtaining accommodation.

There are foster carer placements required where children and young people can feel safe and begin to build a new life for themselves.

Fostering Agencies are looking for foster carers who can provide a stable foster home.

Asylum seekers need lots of support and encouragement to help them feel safe and secure.

Youngsters do well when they are placed with a foster carer of the same language, religion and culture.

Asylum seekers often return to their home country once the reasons that forced them to leave no longer exist.

They will remain the responsibility of the local authority until they reach 18 years of age.
